What Wedding Rings Symbolise

Wedding and engagement rings are usually the most significant pieces of jewellery that you will buy in your lifetime.

Ancient Wedding Rings

The wedding ring is the most prevailing and universal piece of symbolism in the world. A band that bonds you with your beloved. Some of the earliest known examples of wedding rings were found in Ancient Egypt, where they saw the circle of the ring as a symbol of eternity to represent the forever love of your partner. The significance of wearing the ring on the third finger of your left hand comes from the Ancient Egyptians belief that the vein in that finger led directly to a persons heart. Although scientifically inaccurate, it's a beautiful idea!

Engagement Ring Meaning

Engagement rings come with a similar symbolism and can be even richer with meaning depending on the stone chosen. You may assume that lovers are trying to be as impressive as possible by traditionally choosing diamonds, sapphires and rubies as the stones for engagement rings, but there is also a rational reason for their popularity (and price). On top of their dazzling beauty, these stones top the list of the hardest gemstones out there. Diamonds being numero uno. This makes them the most hard-wearing and least likely to get scratched out of all of the stones. Bear in mind that you will (hopefully) be wearing your engagement ring every day for the rest of your life so it will see a lot of action.

Finding Ring Size

If you are planning on proposing to your beloved, you may want to do it in the most romantic, traditional style - on bended knee, ring in hand. If so, the biggest question in your head must be "How do I find my partners ring size?". There are many suggestions out there but this is an important measurement to get right, to save on having to have the ring resized. Finding one of their favourite rings will only work if they wear it on their ring finger of their left hand as our individual fingers are different sizes. And even then, we would happily wear a fashion ring that doesn't fit absolutely perfectly but wedding and engagement rings are worn daily so need to be a perfect fit. A fun way to propose is to buy a cheap, plastic ring to propose with on the promise of taking them ring shopping when they accept. I have a nice and cheap Proposal Pack here: Propose Or, if you really want to choose the ring yourself, get a friend of your lovers in on the surprise. They can take them out ring shopping pretending it's for them and, while they're getting their finger sized, persuade your partner to get theirs sized too.

I love talking to people about their forever rings so get in touch if you have an idea for something that isn’t on my website, I’d love to work with you to create your dream rings. As with all of my other jewellery, a percentage of the sale of your ring will be donated to the refugee charity Choose Love, so you will be forever wearing a piece of jewellery that has spread some love to those in need.
